The destination is only half the adventure… surviving the journey is the real achievement
There’s something magical about a South African family road trip. Whether you’re escaping for the July school holidays, visiting loved ones or setting off to explore somewhere new, a little preparation – and a healthy sense of humour, can make all the difference. These family road trip tips will help you navigate the snack requests, sibling squabbles and inevitable chorus of “Are we there yet?” while making the journey just as memorable as the destination.
Stage One: The Excitement Is Real
The first few kilometres are always filled with optimism. Everyone’s smiling. The children are waving goodbye. Snacks are neatly packed. The playlist is on point. The holiday has officially begun. Wooooohoooo!
Enjoy this moment. It’s wonderfully peaceful while it lasts.
Stage Two: Snacks Become the Most Valuable Currency in the Car
If there’s one universal truth about travelling with children, it’s this: No matter how much food you’ve packed, someone will be hungry before you’ve even reached the first traffic light.
A well-stocked snack bag can solve more problems than you might expect. Healthy options, a few favourite treats and plenty of water go a long way towards keeping little travellers happy between stops.
Memories of my own mother’s ‘healthy’ road trip snacks still haunt me, particularly a tooth-breaking dish of shrunken, ‘cremated’ chicken pieces that became missiles of mass destruction when war broke out on the backseat.
Handy hint: keep a packet of emergency snacks hidden away.
Stage Three: The Great Back Seat Negotiations Begin
One child wants the window. Another wants the charging cable.
Someone crossed that invisible line in the middle of ‘no mans’ land’ into forbidden territory and suddenly “He’s on my side of the car!!!!” drowns out the carefully collated road-trip playlist…
Someone else insists their sibling is “breathing too loudly.”
Family road trips have a remarkable way of turning the back seat into a full-scale negotiation room. In the interest of avoiding a that full scale war my own mother would build a wall – literally construct a wall of linen between the two of us to keep the peace.
A little planning can help. Giving each child their own small entertainment bag, with books, colouring activities, travel games or downloaded movies can provide welcome distractions when the kilometres start adding up.
Stage Four: Toilet Stops Follow No Known Rules
Everyone confidently declared they used the bathroom before leaving. Fast forward thirty minutes.
“I really need to go.”
And, for those who have that ‘we’re doing this trip in one shot’ kind of parent, who stops for absolutely nothing – polite screams of ‘PLEEAAASE – I REALLY need to go’
Experienced road-tripping parents know that when an opportunity for a clean, convenient stop presents itself, it must be taken – even if nobody thinks they need it.
You might lose granny or the family dog along the way – just make sure you do a headcount when everyone piles back in – but trust us, that pit stop is definitely worth it!
Future-you will be grateful.
Stage Five: Embrace the Unexpected
Not every memorable moment is planned. Sometimes it’s discovering a charming farm stall with homemade rusks, finding the perfect picnic spot, spotting wildlife from the road or stumbling across a tiny town you’d never heard of before. Ten-to-one you’ve found some gems when Google Maps takes you down the craziest of paths after telling you to turn left (when there’s no left available) and then someone (we won’t mention who) won’t stop to ask directions.
These unplanned moments often become the stories your family laughs about for years to come.
So don’t be afraid to take the scenic route, stretch your legs and enjoy the journey instead of rushing through it.
Stage Six: Silence Can Mean Two Very Different Things
Sometimes silence means everyone has finally fallen asleep. It’s glorious.
Other times… Silence means someone is quietly emptying an entire packet of biscuits onto the floor, giving their teddy bear a juice box “bath”, or decorating the window with sticky fingerprints or worse yet… koki pen!
A quick glance in the rear-view mirror every now and then is never a bad idea.
Stage Seven: Comfort Makes a Bigger Difference Than You Think
By the time jackets, suitcases, backpacks, cooler boxes, sports gear and everyone’s “must-have” travel pillow have found a place, space inside the car suddenly feels very valuable.
A comfortable journey isn’t just about reaching your destination – it’s about giving everyone enough room to relax, keeping essentials within easy reach and making those longer drives feel far less stressful.
Whether you’re planning a weekend escape or a cross-country family adventure, choosing a vehicle that suits your passengers and luggage can make all the difference. From spacious SUVs to versatile family vehicles, having room to breathe means everyone arrives feeling refreshed and ready to enjoy the holiday.
Because the Best Stories Rarely Start at the Destination
Ask any family about their favourite holiday memories, and chances are they won’t just talk about where they stayed.
They’ll remember the singalongs, the roadside coffee stops, the hilarious games of “I Spy”, the unexpected detours, the spectacular scenery and, yes, even the endless chorus of “Are we there yet?”
Those are the moments that become family legends.
This July, embrace the adventure, laugh at the little mishaps and remember that the journey is part of the holiday too.
